Es bueno subir al desvan de vez en cuando y desempolvar viejas cosas......desprenderse de algunas,volver a adoptar otras.......abrir cajas que por motivo del tiempo teniamos completamente olvidado su contenido......eso fue lo que hice hace algun tiempo cuando aparecio una caja que contenia "The Encyclopedia of Modern Jazz" y justo al lado habia otra con una etiqueta que solo daba a entender la silaba Ver---,la abri y de pronto me acorde que tenia un mogollon de Cds de la discografica Verve y aprovechando que el año pasado JSOCL,inauguro el mes de Marzo como "Mes internacional de Blue Note" pues este año vamos a hacer idem de lo mismo en el mes de Abril y con Verve.
Y ahora algo de historia........
Verve Records fue fundada en 1956 por Norman Granz,uno de los primeros en tratar de inmortalizar las sesiones de los mejores jazzmen en formato vinilo,como resultado de la fusión de los sellos de Granz, Down Home, Norgran Records (fundado en 1953) y su sello más antiguo Clef Records, que databa de 1946,cuyo catálogo pasó a formar parte de Verve Records.Del sello Clef surgieron los Jazz At The Philharmonic.
How High The Moon con Ella Fitzgerald fue el primer álbum en vivo, que apareció en el mercado. Con Ella Fitzgerald bajo contrato se sentarían las bases de Verve Records, empresa que ganaría en importancia de la mano de Fitzgerald.
La primera producción de Verve Records fue todo un éxito y se convirtió en un clásico del jazz americano: "Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book”. Otros trabajos de Fitzgerald fueron garantia de los éxitos del sello discográfico,consiguiendo en 1958 por sus interpretaciones con Duke Ellington y Irving Berlin el primer Grammy para una mujer del jazz.
En total serían 7 los galardones Grammy que el sello conseguiría de la mano de Fitzgerald.
Durante los primeros años, graban para el sello artistas como Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Lester Young, Kid Ory, Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Gerry Mulligan, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Illinois Jacquet, Art Tatum, Flip Phillips y Teddy Wilson, además de vocalistas como Billie Holiday,la anteriormente mencionada Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day, Nina Simone, Mel Torme y Blossom Dearie.
A comienzos de los años 1960 Verve comienza, con la concurrencia directa del sello Blue Note Records, a ampliar el abanico de su oferta; la discográfica comenzó a producir álbumes de música folk y lírica, y se subió también a la moda del rock & roll.
Granz vendió su empresa en 1961 por aprox. 3 millones de euros al grupo mediático MGM,la compañia con la que trabajo en su epoca en la industria cinematografica,retirándose a la vez del negocio tal y como se fijó en el contrato de venta.
El productor Creed Taylor
Bajo la nueva dirección de Creed Taylor se contrató a estrellas como Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, Cal Tjader y Stan Getz, que obtiene un gran éxito gracias a sus colaboraciones con Antonio Carlos Jobim,Joao y Astrud Gilberto. En los 60, el sello firma a artistas y grupos de la escena pop y rock, como Ricky Nelson, The Righteous Brothers, The Velvet Underground, Richie Havens, Janis Ian, The Blues Project.
Creed Taylor abandonó el sello en 1967 para crear el suyo propio CTI Records,tras haber creado en Verve una división, Verve Folkways (más tarde rebautizada como Verve Forecast) dedicada a la música folk. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass es un ejemplo de las producciones bajo la dirección de Taylor.
A finales de los años 60 el sello, que se caracterizó por su flexibilidad, produjo bandas de música experimental como The Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa o The Mothers of Invention.
En 1972, MGM vende sus compañías discográficas a Polydor, por lo que Verve pasa a formar parte de la familia internacional de PolyGram.
En los setenta y ochenta las divisiones europeas y japonesas de Verve se dedican a la reedición de los álbumes más importantes del catálogo, mientras que la división americana no volvería a la activad completa hasta la llegada del CD, lo que, como ocurre con la mayor parte de los sellos clásicos, derivó en la digitalización y reedición de su amplio y valioso catálogo.
Pero Verve no sólo mira hacia la pasado, sino que sigue editando nuevos álbumes de artistas ya veteranos como Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, John McLaughlin, Kenny Barron, Roy Hargrove y Joe Sample, y de nuevos talentos, como Regina Carter, Nicholas Payton, Chris Potter, Christian MacBride, Danilo Perez y Kurt Rosenwinkel. Por otra parte, continuando con la tradición de grandes vocalistas, el sello obtiene un enorme éxito con Diana Krall y Natalie Cole, aunque la nómina de cantantes incluye también las voces de Cassandra Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter, Shirley Horn y Dee Dee Bridgewater. Además, Verve se acerca de la vanguardia electrónica, editando tres volúmenes de Verve remixed, con remezclas de clásicos a cargo de Djs y productores actuales.
Tommy Lipuma,actual productor
Desde Enero de 1999, con la fusión de PolyGram y Universal Music, Verve Records, bajo la dirección de Tommy LiPuma y Ron Goldstein, pasa a formar parte de Verve Music Group, absorbiendo el catálogo de jazz de los sellos de Universal (Commodore, Chess, Decca Records, Brunswick, Argo, Cadet, Dot, Coral, ABC-Paramount, A&M, Mercury Records, Philips y Polydor Records).
De los pocos discos que poseo,dada la enorme cantidad de trabajos de calidad que ha salido de este emblematico sello,uno de los que mas me impresiono fue este delicioso trabajo de Abbey Lincoln........espero que disfruteis de este mes de Abril que viene muy cargadito de buen Jazz.Saludos,PPJZZ.
