En 1953 en Toronto, Canadá, una asociación de aficionados al jazz, la "New Jazz Society", eligió a los mejores músicos del jazz del momento y decidió contratarlos para celebrar un concierto con esa particular formación. Los músicos que eligieron son sin duda algunos de los más importantes de la historia del jazz: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus y Max Roach. Charlie Parker llegó a Toronto sin saxo, debido seguramente a que estaba empeñado en alguna tienda de Nueva York a cambio de dinero para una dosis de heroína. Por este motivo tocó con un saxofón de plástico que le prestaron en una tienda del propio Toronto. Todos los solos son espléndidos. Charlie Parker transforma su saxofón de plástico en un instrumento del metal más noble. Bud Powell parece que tocase con la mayor de las concentraciones. Dizzy Gillespie está inmenso y qué decir de Max Roach y Charles Mingus. En cuanto al desarrollo del concierto, se inició con el impresionante trío de Powell, Mingus y Roach. A continuación entra el quinteto y es cuando todo se desata: swing a raudales, bop de primera categoría y una música realmente espectacular. El ultimo disco que grabaron juntos Parker y Gillespie y el único en el que participo Monk. Atrás quedaban los tiempos difíciles en los que los críticos y parte del publico criticaban con dureza su música, ya eran los reyes indiscutibles del jazz y no había vuelta atrás. El líder del cambio (Parker) junto al hombre que lo supo vender (Gillespie) y, para alcanzar la perfección absoluta, el filosofo del bop, el hombre misterioso, el músico que descubriría la cuadratura del circulo del jazz, el gran Thelonious Monk al piano.
