Con Louis Armstrong, Ella grabaría tres discos, entre ellos éste: Ella & Louis, en el que la cálida voz de Ella y el impecable sonido de la trompeta de Armstrong se funden a lo largo de todas las canciones, en lo que se ha denominado "la base de todo dueto de jazz". Pero su condición de trompetista no impidió que Armstrong participase también con su voz, inconfundible y rasgada, en algunos duetos. Ella y Louis trabajaron duro y se implicaron mucho para producir este disco, que sería editado en 1956 y que deja patente la perfecta combinación y compenetración de estos dos músicos excepcionales.
