The information contained in this lesson is not new–for an advanced player–however the book and the DVD complete with backing tracks is well worth the price. I was able to get through the book in a weekend and have a few new ideas. I have made the exercises part of my warm-up routine as they will have you moving across and down the neck in a logical manner.

The first few pages show how to work the blues scale up and down the neck using the basic pentatonic boxes and slides–diagonal approach. Next the author shows the three-note per string approach to using pentatonics which has a more modern and less “boxy” sound than trying to work it all in one position.

Then he continues on with the aeolian, dorian, phrygian, locrian, harmonic and melodic minor, and other more exotic scale work. What I like about the examples is that the author not only works them at various tempos but also shows to work them backwards, a powerful tool to increase your musical vocabulary. Having the DVD makes all of the difference as it shows the author playing the examples according to his convictions which tends to bring life to the book.

JACO PASTORIUS / MODERN ELECTRIC BASS

Esta es una sección que que quería hacer desde hace mucho tiempo pero nunca  he tenido el tiempo o las ganas suficientes para poder empezar a hacerla.

Este es un vídeo valido  para cualquier músico,indiferentemente si su instrumento es el bajo o no,.Yo soy de la opinión de que el instrumento es solo un medio,que lo importante es la música,da igual que toques piano,guitarra o el bandoneón.....todavía me acuerdo la sensación que produjo en mi ,allá por los finales de los setenta, la primera escucha de "Heavy Weather" de Weather Report......ese Teen Town....es descomunal....como tocaba Pastorius el bajo eléctrico,ese sonido tan propio,tan personal,creo que todavía no lo ha igualado nadie.... aún hoy día sigue siendo el espejo donde se tienen que mirar muchos bajistas jóvenes......uno de los cuales,

Hadrien Feraud,al que he estado escuchando mucho últimamente (gracias Jazzy), quizás sea indirectamente el motivo por el cual he hecho este post sobre Jaco.

Ya sabéis lo imprevisible que podría ser Jaco Pastorius,lo genial de este método es que no es un método,mas bien es una entrevista a Pastorius con un Fender Jazz Bass super-currado sobre sus rodillas,donde el entrevistador, Jerry Jemmott,bajo en mano tambien,entlaba una tertulia sobre música.

Todo dentro de un ambiente distendido,Jaco Pastorius habla sobre sus influencias,inicios, técnicas y formas de practicar,donde al término de cada ejercicio se marca un solo de bajo que te puedes morir........pero eso no es todo,casi al final del vídeo hay una sesión de media hora con John Scoffield a la guitarra,y su baterista en aquel momento Kenwood Dennard,que ya ni te cuento....bueno....y si nunca habíais visto a Pastorius tocar el piano....que os puedo decir..... que era todo un CRACK.

Que disfrutéis de la música amigos,y si hay por ahí algún estudiante de bajo al que le haya servido este método,que por favor me lo comente.
